What Are The Causes Of Male Infertility?

There are several different causes of male infertility. Some of these causes are acquired meaning that they happen after birth, usually through infection, injury, surgery, illness, or medication. Some of the causes are congenital, meaning that they are present at birth. Sometimes these disorders can be corrected with surgery and sometimes it merely takes correcting the agitating cause.

The most common cases of acquired infertility result from repeated sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and chlamydia. Another common cause of acquired infertility is trauma to the penis or testicles. This type of trauma can interfere with the production, or delivery of sperm. Some of these acquired conditions can also be considered congenital, however in these cases the trauma resulted after birth and not as a birth defect.

Congenital infertility is a direct result of a defect at birth. The majority of these are a direct result of a hormonal imbalance. However, this is not always the case. Any abnormal reproductive organ that causes reproductive problems, such as non-descending testicles, is a congenital infertility issue.

Whether it is congenital or acquired, the most common causes of infertility in men are blocked reproductive tracts, absence of sperm (azoospermia), low sperm count (oligospermia), malformed sperm, or inactive sperm. Your doctor or a fertility specialist can rule out several of these conditions with a simple semen sample.

The problem is many men find the thought of going to a doctor about such a private issue unbearable. Male infertility can sometimes be reversed if the problem is sought out and corrected. However, to figure out the problem, it is best to discuss your problem with your physician or to visit with a fertility specialist. Both of these medical professionals can perform tests and give you the answers and solutions you need to remedy your infertility.
